Man and Superman[]

Author: Marv Wolfman, Artist: Claudio Castellini

Synopsis: Clark Kent has come to Metropolis like any other small-town boy chasing his dreams. Grabbing any work he can find, he struggles to become a reporter for the Daily Planet like his journalistic idol Lois Lane...and to figure out a way to use his incredible hidden powers to help the city he loves."

This story describes a part of Superman's life that is seldom explored. As Wolfman explains, "Although he came from another place, Clark was raised in the small town Smallville from the time he was an infant. In my mind he is far more a child of Kansas than of Krypton. Clark might have super powers, but they can’t help a young boy from a small town cope with a city larger than anything he had ever seen before. He may be able to bend steel in his bare hands, but that won’t help him find his very first apartment. Or job. He might be invulnerable, but that doesn’t teach him how to deal with the forces that all of us, born without powers, must face every day of our lives." Wolfman also described how he wanted to show Clark's first encounter with Lois Lane by hearing her speak but without seeing her, as he always felt Clark was attracted to her mind and talent first and her beauty later.
